- INTRODUCTION
-
-
- Hello, Thank You for your purchase of Phoenix Publishing's VERSION 5.0
- CD-ROM, our latest collection of Public Domain & Shareware programs.
-
- Before you begin, let us take a second to inform you that we have made
- several major enhancements to our operating program. For those of you who
- have purchased our previous versions, we are pleased to offer you VERSION
- 5.0. We trust you will be as thrilled with using VERSION 5.0 as we are in
- presenting it with all its features & latest software to you.
-
- Our first change is that we now require an install to be done prior to
- its actual use. This installation serves two purposes. First, a normal DOS
- based installation allows this CD-ROM to be accessed directly from a DOS
- prompt. Second, a few files will be installed which will allow VERSION 5.0
- to be run under your Program Manager setup under WINDOWS. That is correct,
- now PHOENIX PUBLISHING offers DUAL operating options in one, painless
- installation step. Third, for those of you who are using Windows in your
- computer, our Windows interface has two extra special features. A key word
- search through your current index file. Our second enhancement allows you
- to view files contained within a .zip file & unzip only those files. These
- extras features are explained in more detail in our Windows Section below.
-
-
- WHAT IS SHAREWARE?
-
-
- Shareware constitutes a low cost alternative to many IBM programs.
- Its greatest advantage is that you get to try a program before you buy it.
- There are no hassles in obtaining a RMA from a store manager or having to
- present your sales slip. Shareware is a method of product distribution &
- its overall quality & functionality is improving rapidly.
-
- This is only happening since many users support Shareware products
- by sending in their registration fees when they find a software item which
- suits their needs, applications or desires. In reality, if you use any
- shareware product past its trial period without registering it, you are
- violating Shareware laws & in effect, stealing it from an author.
-
- You should know that many Shareware programs found on your PHOENIX
- CD-ROM come from many hundreds of skilled Shareware authors not only from
- America, yet from dozens of other countries worldwide.
-
- Your support is important & is greatly appreciated by each individual
- author. With it, Shareware authors are encouraged to design & distribute
- new products. Without it, a great deal of high quality, low cost software
- will cease to be readily available as a commercial software alternative.
-
- We hope many of these Shareware products on our CD-ROM become a part
- of your system & we urge you to evaluate other Shareware products when you
- decide to add additional software to your system.
-
- Please, register all Shareware that you use. It is only right.
-
- Following is a brief observation & commentary about new trends in
- Shareware Distribution & how it relates to CD-ROM publishing. It is not
- intended to offend anybody. We publically apologize if it does. We are
- only attempting to inform Endusers about current actions & how an Enduser
- may be affected by those actions.
-
- We would like to make mention of current events as far as this whole
- concept of Shareware Distribution & how it relates to CD-ROM. In recent
- months some Shareware Authors have been becoming very restrictive as far
- as having their individual programs grouped as part of a CD-ROM. PHOENIX
- would like you to know that we (CD-ROM Publishers) are providing a service
- to both people. Both people? YES, Authors, by helping to get YOUR programs
- into more households for evaluation. Hopefully that this will increase
- an Author's number of registered users. We also help Individual people by
- offering THOUSANDS of programs on a trial basis. We expose them to Fresh,
- New Authors, New Programs, Updated Software & much more for only a small
- fraction of a cost per CD-ROM as opposed to many Authors distributing them
- via any other media.
-
- We here at PHOENIX have spent many hours trying to make sure we did
- not go against an Author's distribution plan. We believe we have conformed
- to as many directives as possible that we knew about when this CD-ROM was
- released into production. If you are a Shareware Author & object to having
- your work included on this CD-ROM, please notify us so that we can remove
- it from our library & discontinue it from future releases.
-
- * A quick note about our file dates & File Authenticity Error:
-
- Most of these files are late 1993 & early 1994 dates. We have tried
- to remove comment notes from files obtained from BBS systems. We also
- tried to make an effort to insure that all files are contained within
- each package. That is why many of our dates are 4-7-94. We are trying
- to present a quality CD-ROM product. This is also why you may see an
- error stating File Authenticity Failed. This is not a serious error,
- it usually happens when we have stripped a comment from a file. We
- did nothing to alter files in any form.
-
-
- INSTALLATION
-
-
- Let's walk through installing VERSION 5.0 right now. This way you can
- have a pretty good idea of what to expect & how this CD-ROM will function.
- We will assume that right now you are doing your installation from DOS. In
- a few seconds, we will give you instructions how to include PHOENIX under
- your Program Manager under Windows 3.X. First of all, switch to your CDROM
- drive letter. For our example here, we will pretend it is letter P. From
- your P prompt, just type install & press enter, like so: INSTALL [ENTER].
- Install will now ask you what drive you want put your operating files on.
- For this example, we will say it is drive C. All you need to do is type C.
- In a few seconds, install will make add new sub-directory on your C drive
- called WINROM & five files will be copied in there. They are:
-
- 1. PHOENIX.EXE < Use this command from your DOS prompt.
- 2. VBRUN300.DLL < Required for operation under Windows 3.X.
- 3. VZIP.EXE < An extra feature for Windows users.
- 4. WINROM.CFG < Your Windows configuration file.
- 5. WINROM.EXE < A command line for Windows Program Manager.
-
- For those of you who wish to add PHOENIX VERSION 5.0 to your Windows
- Program Manager here is all you have to do:
-
- 1. <ALT> F
- 2. Choose NEW
- 3. Select Program Item & press [ENTER]
- Set as follows:
- Description: WINROM
- Command Line: WINROM.EXE
- Working Directory: C:\WINROM <Remember, C is where Install went>
- 4. Press [ENTER] & you will add a CD-ROM inside of a jewel case
- to your desktop set of icons.
-
- You have now completed installation of our CD-ROM into your computer.
- We will now walk through our basic commands & functions so you can begin
- enjoying our latest (& best) addition to your CD-ROM library. This section
- will explain how this CD-ROM will operate from your DOS prompt. Next, we
- are going to explain how this CD will function as a Windows application.
- There are differences between both of these styles, so you may want to try
- both of them to find out which you prefer or is more suited to your needs.
-
-
- DOS OPERATION GUIDELINES
-
-
- At your DOS prompt, type CD\WINROM & press [ENTER]. This will change
- to our working WINROM directory. You should see C:\WINROM> All you have to
- do here is just type PHOENIX [ENTER]. This will bring up our new main menu
- which includes several new topic areas not previously released by PHOENIX.
- You will see our 42 main topic selections. Here, only three functions are
- available for your use. They are as follows [D]isplay, [S]upport & [Q]uit.
-
- MAIN MENU SELECTIONS
-
- [D]isplay will ask you to enter a number of a directory that you are
- interested in looking at. For example, if you want to see what files can
- be found in ANIMATION, press D, then 1.
-
- [S]upport brings up a small screen which indicates where you can get
- technical support for PHOENIX.EXE & WINROM.EXE. There is also a mailing
- address for authors to send their new material for being submitted in our
- future CD-ROM versions. We do accept files on either 3.5 or 5.25 floppys &
- both high & low density formats.
-
- [Q]uit will allow you to escape from PHOENIX.EXE to DOS.
-
- DISPLAY MENU SELECTIONS
-
- We will spend a few minutes to fully explain how our [D]isplay option
- works. After you have entered D & then 1, you will see a listing of files
- available to you in Animation. Your choice of options at this point are:
- [R]etrieve, [C]opy, [F]orward, [B]ackward & [Q]uit.
-
- [R]etrieve is used to unzip a file from our CD-ROM onto your system.
- If you press [R], you will be asked for a number to match which file you
- want to unzip from our CD-ROM. [R]etrieve will offer you a suggested sub-
- directory as a destination. Y or N is all you need to select. If you pick
- N, you will then be given an option to unzip your file into any drive &
- sub-directory you desire. If you enter a subdirectory which does not exist
- on your target drive, [R]etrieve will make it for you.
-
- * In order for [R]etrieve to properly function, you must be sure that
- you have a current copy of PKUNZIP.EXE in your path. If you do not have a
- copy, we have provided it in our PKWARE sub-directory. Pkunzip & its other
- files are Shareware programs & require proper registration to Pkware, Inc.
-
- [C]opy will copy a file from our CD-ROM onto your hard drive (In its
- zipped form). If you choose [C], you will be asked for a file number to
- copy. After entering your file number, you will be asked for a destination
- path (Drive letter & sub-directory, For example: C:\SAMPLE). In case you
- enter a target path which does not exist on your target drive, [C]opy will
- make it automatically for you.
-
- [F]orward displays another successive screen (If available) of file
- names & descriptions. You will see a page # of # counter in our upper
- right hand corner of this display.
-
- [B]ackward displays a previous screen (If available) of file names &
- descriptions. You will see a page # of # counter in our upper right hand
- corner of this display.
-
- [Q]uit will return you from this screen to our Main Topic Menu.
-
-
- WINDOWS OPERATION GUIDELINES

- offer a Windows interface, we do not require it for accessing VERSION 5.0.
- We repeated our Windows installation process if you missed it earlier.
-
- For those of you who wish to add PHOENIX VERSION 5.0 to your Windows
- Program Manager here is all you have to do:
-
- 1. <ALT> F
- 2. Choose NEW
- 3. Select Program Item & press [ENTER]
- Set as follows:
- Description: WINROM
- Command Line: WINROM.EXE
- Working Directory: C:\WINROM <Remember, C is where Install went>

- mouse or trackball arrows to view our entire list. To select a given topic
- area, move your cursor over it & highlight it by clicking on your choice.
- A green bar will appear & your Log Menu Selections will now be available.
-
- Help brings up a single screen of help tips, all are covered here.
-
- Quit returns you to our Main Menu Selections.
-
- LOG MENU SELECTIONS
-
- When you click our Log button, six options appear. They are Retrieve,
- View, Copy, Search, Help, & Quit.
-
- To avoid repeating ourselves & making this file longer & more boring
- than it already is, Retrieve, Copy, Help, & Quit will not be explained in
- this section. You can learn about them under DOS DISPLAY MENU SELECTION.
-
- An important note for Windows users: Be sure that xcopy.exe is in
- your DOS sub directory path. Xcopy is needed for Copy function to work.
-
- Two features under our Windows interface & not DOS are View & Search.
-
- View allows you to look at individual files contained within a .zip.
- You may decide to Retrieve an individual file or more from within a zipped
- file by highlighting them & using Retrieve as described above.
-
- Search is a key word search feature which will scan through a current
- displayed listing for any word you decide to search for. This will make a
- short listing of files & descriptions with your match if any are found.
-
